First Day of Fall Term
First Day of Fall Term at the Center for Irish Music. Youth ensembles start the week of September 9th.
Wren Intermediate Ensemble: Fall
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulThe Wren Ensemble is an intermediate level mixed-instrument ensemble. Directed by Mary Vanorny with assistance from Morien McBurnie (guitar, banjo), students will learn tunes and arrange them in sets to perform together as a group. This class has a strong focus on building ensemble skills including playing fluently, adding variations, listening to each other, maintaining excellent rhythm, using simple harmonies, preparing for performances, increasing knowledge of traditional Irish music, and having fun with each other and the music!
Ensemble students are required to take weekly private lessons from a CIM instructor. Private lessons with CIM instructors support learning the ensemble repertoire and reinforce technical & stylistic aspects of each student's instrument. Financial aid is available.

Swallowtail Intermediate Ensemble: Fall

Directed by Hannah Flowers and Carmen Pasquerella, students will learn tunes and arrange them in sets to perform together as a group. This class has a strong focus on building ensemble skills including playing fluently, adding variations, listening to each other, maintaining excellent rhythm, using simple harmonies, preparing for performances, increasing knowledge of traditional Irish music, and having fun with each other and the music! Starling Intermediate Ensemble: Fall
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulThe Starling Ensemble is a fun and challenging class for intermediate-advanced musicians who are well on their way with Irish music. Directed by fiddler Mary Vanorny with ensemble assistant Gabby Pasquerella (flute, guitar), the Starling Ensemble students know lots of tunes and can play them with solid rhythm and groove. Students will learn tunes and arrange them in sets to perform together as a group.
This class has a strong focus on building ensemble skills including playing fluently, adding variations, listening to each other, maintaining excellent rhythm, using simple harmonies, preparing for performances, increasing knowledge of traditional Irish music, and having fun with each other and the music!
Mark your calendars for the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil in St. Louis on the weekend of May 7-9, 2027. Members of this ensemble will most likely participate in group competitions.

Advanced Youth Ensemble: Fall
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulThe Center for Irish Music Advanced Youth Ensemble (AYE) is a year-round program for experienced youth musicians who love to play with others, arrange music and perform. Musicians in this ensemble have a large repertoire of tunes, learn quickly by ear and have the skills to play Irish traditional music with great rhythm and style. Throughout the year, this ensemble will perform at local festivals and events while developing unique and beautiful repertoire (and working on it in a group of mixed instruments).
In 2026-27, Advanced Youth Ensemble musicians will be working with Brian Miller, with artistic support from other CIM instructors throughout the year. Admission to AYE is at the discretion of CIM’s Youth Ensemble Leadership Team and may require an audition.

Corncrake Beginning Ensemble: Fall
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulThis mixed-instrument ensemble is open to young musicians who know about 10-15 full-length Irish tunes (jigs, reels, or polkas). Directed by Hannah Flowers and Carmen Pasquerella, students will work together to improve their core Irish music skills which include learning music by ear and maintaining excellent rhythm and pitch.

DADGAD Guitar Accompaniment
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulFrom his long experience of developing and using the DADGAD guitar tuning playing with great groups such as Skara Brae, Trian, Altan and Fingal and individual greats such as Tommy Peoples, Liz Carroll, James Kelly and Paddy O’Brien, and even Dolly Parton, Dáithí has found DADGAD tuning to be a versatile avenue to interesting and beautiful guitar accompaniment.
In this class he looks forward to providing insights and advice on how to get the most out of your guitar playing through exploring the tuning and guidance for left-hand and right-hand playing.

Irish Pub Songs: Fall

This Fall, we will offer two sections of this class so students can participate remotely and in person at CIM. Please check the location ("Online" or "MULT" for in person) before registering.
Pub songs are raucous, tuneful, and above all, fun! But like the most intricate reel, you need skill and a concentrated approach to play and sing them well. Todd will teach the vocal techniques and rhythmic strategies needed to help you stand and deliver these wonderful ballads and drinking songs. All instruments encouraged.

Irish Myths and Legends

We are lucky enough to have an abundance of old stories preserved in manuscripts dealing with Otherworld creatures and legendary kings, queens and heroes. In this class Dáithí and students will be reading translations of the old myths and legends — these always give rise to fascinating and entertaining conversations, often with lessons for the present. This class will be dealing with stories not covered in previous sessions.

Easy Whistle Tunes for Adults: Fall
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. Paul*In-Person Class*
Kate will teach a lovely new whistle tune each week and introduce basic (optional) ornaments such as cuts and rolls. At the end of this course, you'll know a tune from every rhythm family! Each class will include some review of previously-learned tunes, so you will see your repertoire build each week.
All budding whistle players who know at least 3 tunes are welcome to join Kate!

Driving the Dance: How to Play for Social Dances
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulThis 3-session class is for Irish musicians (melody players only) who would like the experience of playing for dancers and also have an opportunity to learn some easy social dances. We’ll choose some tunes ahead of time so that you’ll be familiar with them before the first meeting. At the classes, we’ll rehearse the tunes together, teach dances, and take turns switching roles. The final class will end in a céili with members of the Twin Cities Céili band.

Tunes from the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulJoin flutist Norah Rendell and fiddler Danny Diamond for a six-week class exploring tunes shared by visiting artists at recent Minnesota Irish Music Weekend workshops. Each week, Norah and Danny will introduce one or two tunes, along with stories and background about the artists who brought them to our community, giving you a deeper connection to the music and the tradition.
The second half of each class will focus on learning at least one tune directly from Norah or Danny. Depending on the pace and interests of the group, you'll also have opportunities to revisit tunes from previous weeks. Accompanists are welcome to join, but should prepare to be in “listening mode” during the tune-learning portion of the class.
This class is a chance to build your repertoire with tunes that have a special connection to our local Irish music community while getting to know fellow musicians who are growing their tune collections as well. Norah and Danny will select material that is approachable to learn over the six-week session.
Recordings and sheet music will be provided to support your learning. Please note that the sheet music is intended as a reference and to increase accessibility—we'll learn and play the tunes by ear during class.

Join Alisa to learn the Fall collection of Celtic Cuties rhymes, finger plays, and songs in this interactive class, designed to introduce children ages birth to five and their families to traditional Irish music. Class sessions emphasize singing, chanting, instrument play, and movement. Each student will receive a beautifully-illustrated songbook and CD on the first day of class. The cost for these materials ($20) is included in the tuition fee.
Please wear comfortable clothing and be ready to sit, stand and move around.
Sibling Discounts: Siblings under 6 months old are free and do not need to register. Siblings 6 months and up automatically receive 50% off their class fee.
