Basic Steps to Improve Your Rhythm
Online Event MNThis class is for musicians interested in improving their rhythm, dancers interested in understanding the music they dance to, and for anyone interested in learning some basic Irish dance steps. In this intensive, two-hour workshop Danielle will discuss jig, hornpipe, polka, and slide rhythms. As a dancer, Danielle knows how vital it is that these tune types are played with *a* right swing and emphasis. This workshop will begin to explore what that means. Danielle will introduce a few tunes, discuss their phrasing, and teach some basic steps to practice to feel the nuance of the tune type in your body. You can dance with your feet, seated with your hands, or watch and learn.

Uilleann Pipes Workshop with Colm Broderick
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulColm is a multiple All-Ireland champion piper and was selected by Na Píobairí Uilleann as the inheritor of Liam Ó Floinn’s pipes, on Liam’s death in 2018. Having recently been awarded the Gold medal at the Seán O’Riada Bonn Oir competition in Baile Mhuirne, Co. Cork, Colm was invited to a private reception in Áras an Uachtaráin hosted by the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins. While here Colm performed a private concert for the president.

Minnesota Irish Music Weekend

Presented by the Center for Irish Music, Minnesota Irish Music Weekend is a unique festival that pairs world-class traditional Irish musicians and teachers with learners of all ages for a weekend of workshops, lectures, sessions and concerts.
Each of our visiting artists is recognized for their musical mastery, and will offer insights and techniques to help learners tap into the deep roots of traditional Irish music.
The 2022 event will be held in person at our home at the Celtic Junction Arts Center, with opportunities for virtual participation. We plan on offering a limited virtual workshop program for adults. The Saturday Night Master Artists Concert will be broadcast live.

At 7:45pm, there will be a brief program including an introduction of the 2022 MIM visiting artists, the Fitz Scholarship recipients, and an unveiling of the Center for Irish Music's big plans to expand our space at the Celtic Junction. A session will follow the program. Bring your instruments!

MIM Master Artists Concert

Don't miss this rare chance to see Kathleen Conneely (whistle), Seán Clohessy (fiddle), and John Coyne (bouzouki/song) play from their recently released album “All Jokes Aside”. “Their music is simply top shelf and if you’re a traditional music lover it’s one you’ll absolutely have to have to hear for yourself.” says the Irish Echo. In addition, visiting artists Ivan Goff (Danú) on uilleann pipes and flute, award-winning singer and fiddle player Eimear Arkins (Clare), accordion and banjo player Natasha Sheehy (Limerick), and multi-instrumentalist Sky Kelsey (Alaska) will perform together on one stage at the Celtic Junction Arts Center’s Outdoor Stage!

If you know many tunes and have a fair amount of CIM instruction under your belt, come join this fun Monday evening adult ensemble!

Learning to Play Together – CANCELLED
OnlineIf you are a student who has learned a few tunes, but still feel like you are in over your head when playing with a group, this is the class for you!
You don’t have to be able to play “at speed” or perfectly, the class will accommodate the participants’ skill levels as they progress to the inherent joys of playing music with other people. While our lessons are being conducted online, we will focus on playing with an accompanist or following another melody player. Melody instruments only.

Combined Intermediate Ensemble (Redwing & Osprey)
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulDirected by Mary Vanorny and Hannah Flowers, students will learn tunes and arrange them in sets to perform together as a group. This class has a strong focus on building ensemble skills including playing fluently, adding variations, listening to each other, maintaining excellent rhythm, using simple harmonies, preparing for performance, increasing knowledge of traditional Irish music, and having fun with each other and the music!

Irish Myths & Legends
Online Event MNWe are lucky enough to have an abundance of old stories preserved in manuscripts dealing with Otherworld creatures and legendary kings, queens and heroes. In this class Dáithí and students will be reading translations of the old myths and legends — these always give rise to fascinating and entertaining conversations, often with lessons for the present. This class will be dealing with stories not covered in previous sessions.

Beginning Ensemble
The Center for Irish Music 836 Prior Avenue North, Ste. 400, St. PaulIrish music is most fun when it is played with friends! Join Brian Miller for the Beginning Ensemble in 2021-22, an in-person class. This first-time mixed-instrument ensemble is open to musicians ages 9-12 who know about 10-15 full-length Irish tunes (jigs, reels, or polkas). This class is a great opportunity to meet new Irish music friends who play different instruments, and to improve your Irish music skills which include learning music by ear, rhythm, pitch and repertoire!
