Join fully-vaccinated flute player Norah for an opportunity to play the 2020 and 2021 Common Tunes outside, at regular session speed. Formalized as a class for safety and structure, we'll meet outside the Celtic Junction on Tuesdays from 8-9pm (max 10 musicians). Musicians will lead the group on one set each week, so this is a great way to practice leading sets at a session. Accompanists and melody players at an intermediate to advanced level are welcome! Meeting dates are April 26, May 3, May 10, and May 17.
Recitals will be hosted in person at the Celtic Junction Arts Center's Main Performance Studio. Masks will be required for attendees. Performers may remove their masks when they are performing.
Each recital will be livestreamed, so you can invite family and friends from all over the world to watch!
Summer Registration Deadline for Returning Students, Group Classes & Family Discount
This class is for musicians interested in improving their rhythm, dancers interested in understanding the music they dance to, and for anyone interested in learning some basic Irish dance steps. In this intensive, two-hour workshop Danielle will discuss jig, hornpipe, polka, and slide rhythms. As a dancer, Danielle knows how vital it is that these tune types are played with *a* right swing and emphasis. This workshop will begin to explore what that means. Danielle will introduce a few tunes, discuss their phrasing, and teach some basic steps to practice to feel the nuance of the tune type in your body. You can dance with your feet, seated with your hands, or watch and learn.
The Center for Irish Music is closed for Memorial Day.
Colm is a multiple All-Ireland champion piper and was selected by Na Píobairí Uilleann as the inheritor of Liam Ó Floinn’s pipes, on Liam’s death in 2018. Having recently been awarded the Gold medal at the Seán O’Riada Bonn Oir competition in Baile Mhuirne, Co. Cork, Colm was invited to a private reception in Áras an Uachtaráin hosted by the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins. While here Colm performed a private concert for the president.
Join us for for the 14th annual Minnesota Irish Music Weekend! Presented by the Center for Irish Music, Minnesota Irish Music Weekend is a unique festival that pairs world-class traditional Irish musicians and teachers with learners of all ages for a weekend of workshops, lectures, sessions and concerts.
Each of our visiting artists is recognized for their musical mastery, and will offer insights and techniques to help learners tap into the deep roots of traditional Irish music.
The 2022 event will be held in person at our home at the Celtic Junction Arts Center, with opportunities for virtual participation. We plan on offering a limited virtual workshop program for adults. The Saturday Night Master Artists Concert will be broadcast live.
Gather at 7pm to enjoy live music from the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend visiting artists. At 7:45pm, there will be a brief program including an introduction of the 2022 MIM visiting artists, the Fitz Scholarship recipients, and an unveiling of the Center for Irish Music's big plans to expand our space at the Celtic Junction. A session will follow the program. Bring your instruments!
The Great Session Experience brings together the Twin Cities Irish music community with multiple sessions happening simultaneously at the Celtic Junction Arts Center. Our goal is to fill every corner of the Celtic Junction with Irish traditional music. Bring your instrument, your musical pals and family members, and join in a session or start one of your own! You may even want to simply relax and enjoy listening to the music over a drink with a friend. Non-musicians are most welcome.
Presented by the Center for Irish Music, the Master Artists Concert is the signature event of the Minnesota Irish Music Weekend. Don't miss this rare chance to see Kathleen Conneely (whistle), Seán Clohessy (fiddle), and John Coyne (bouzouki/song) play from their recently released album “All Jokes Aside”. “Their music is simply top shelf and if you’re a traditional music lover it’s one you’ll absolutely have to have to hear for yourself.” says the Irish Echo. In addition, visiting artists Ivan Goff (Danú) on uilleann pipes and flute, award-winning singer and fiddle player Eimear Arkins (Clare), accordion and banjo player Natasha Sheehy (Limerick), and multi-instrumentalist Sky Kelsey (Alaska) will perform together on one stage at the Celtic Junction Arts Center’s Outdoor Stage!
