The Center for Irish Music is seeking a youth piano player to play with our under-18 céilí band!
A céilí band pianist provides chord accompaniment in coordination with a drummer to make the rhythm section for a 10 member group or fiddles, flutes, accordions and banjos.
Requirements:
- Be Under 18 as of January 1, 2026.
- Learn/create chord parts for three pieces of Irish dance music (2-3 minutes each)
- Have good rhythm/groove. Bonus if you have experience playing chords in an accompaniment role (in any musical style) but that’s not required.
- Attend 10 rehearsals, Wednesdays 5-5:45pm at 836 Prior Ave. N. in St. Paul from Feb 11-May 6. Private lessons might also be necessary. Rehearsals are free for pianists.
- Audition at the Center for Irish Music in late January (date tbd). Pianists will be asked to perform one short piece and then will be asked to read from a chart and play along with the panel. Charts and recordings will be provided in advance of audition.
- Travel to St. Louis with a parent for the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil (competition) the weekend of May 9. Our groups typically do very well at these competitions!
For more information, or if you are interested in auditioning, please contact u18 céilí band director Brian Miller at bmiller@centerforirishmusic.org or by phone at 651-245-3719
